Harry E. Hine died attempting to save W. Milton Brey from drowning, Cairo, Illinois, August 5, 1918. Milton, 11, while wading in the Mississippi River, stepped into deep water. He grasped his father, who swam to him, and they sank and returned to the surface twice. Hine, 22, clerk, swam 15 feet to them, and Milton, who clung to a pair of water wings, took hold of his shoulders. Milton’s father then went to wadable water. Hine made an effort to swim to wadable water with Milton and then paddled to keep afloat. Milton held Hine’s shoulder with one hand, and they drifted 2,000 feet to shallow water. Milton waded to shore, but Hine had died while drifting. He had suffered with asthma for several years. 19129-1442
