Harris McIntosh saved Katharine L. Ewens and three men from drowning, Union Springs, New York, October 22, 1939. A sail-boat, in which Miss Ewens, 20, and the three men were riding on Cayuga Lake, sank in a storm in water 20 feet deep 1,350 feet from shore; and the four got hold of the mast, which extended above the surface. There was wind of 50 m.p.h., heavy rain was falling, and choppy waves were three feet high. From shore McIntosh, 35, production manager, not aware of the number in danger, rowed a small boat 2,800 feet to the sail-boat, the trip requiring a half an hour. Miss Ewens and a man got into the boat, and the others held to the stern. McIntosh cautiously turned the boat and then rowed at an angle with the wind toward shore. After he had rowed 675 feet, one of the men called that he could hold on no longer; and McIntosh released the oars, went aft to the man, and pulled him into the boat. He resumed his rowing; and after having rowed 1,350 feet from the sail-boat, he reached shore, the trip having required 15 minutes. Water in the boat was three inches deep.
