Harold Leland Peace rescued Wayne W. Wofford, Jr., from a runaway automobile, North Apollo, Pennsylvania, August 10, 1981. Wayne, 4, was unattended in the front seat of an automobile that began to roll backward down Center Avenue. Peace, 34, a truck driver who was partially disabled, ran to the automobile and pulled Wayne through its driver’s window, which was open. Seconds after setting Wayne on the pavement, Peace was struck and knocked down by the automobile, which continued downhill and was stopped when it hit and demolished a parked vehicle. Peace was treated for brush burns and Wayne received minor injuries; both recovered.

Harold Leland Peace 78, of North Apollo, Pa. passed away on Monday, August 18, 2025, at Select Specialty Hospital in Natrona Heights, Pa. He was born on Monday, May 5, 1947, in Apollo, Pa., the son of the late Willam and Violet Morrow Peace. Harold was a retired police officer and constable in North Apollo and was a recipient of the Carnegie Hero Award. He enjoyed hunting, shooting, watching dirt track racing and will be missed by his dog, Amos. He was a loving husband and father to his family and a loving uncle to many. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Ann Groholski Peace of North Apollo, his children; Joseph Peace of North Apollo and Jennifer Rumbaugh and her husband, Richard of North Apollo and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Margaret McKean, William Peace, Thomas Peace, Robert Peace, John Peace, George Peace, Ronald Peace and Lewis Peace and many nieces and nephews.
