Harold D. Holmes died helping to save James E. Thach from suffocation, Holyrood, Kansas, August 16, 1973. When Thach, 48, was overcome while working inside a storage tank that had contained crude oil, Holmes,54, gang pusher, descended a ladder to Thach and lifted him to where other men outside the tank opening could remove him. Holmes was overcome before he could leave the tank. Thach was quickly revived while two other workmen, one after the other, entered the tank in an attempt to aid Holmes. Thach then also entered the tank in an attempt to give assistance. All four men died.
