Hallie E. Knapp rescued Barbara, Bonita, Phyllis A., and Ernest Moore from burning, Chehalis, Washington, March 3, 1933. Mrs. Phyllis Moore, 24, who was despondent, at night kindled a fire on the floor of a room of her home. Dense smoke filled the house. Knapp, 31, store manager, saw smoke coming from the eaves of the house, telephoned the fire department, and then ran to the house. Kicking in a door, which was locked, he ran through the smoke-filled dining room to the living room and by the light of flames on the ceiling saw Barbara, 1, and Bonita, 1, in a crib. Knapp grasped the crib and pulled it onto the porch. Crouching low, he again entered the house, found Mrs. Moore unconscious in the middle of the living room, and dragged her by the feet out of the house. Realizing that another child was in the house, Knapp, whose nose was then bleeding, again entered, crawled on his hands and knees in the living room, collided with a chair, and then reached Ernest, 3. Picking up the child, he walked cautiously around the chair and then ran out to the porch. Mrs. Moore and the children recovered, but Barbara and Bonita had scars from severe burns. Knapp sustained scorched hands. 32964-2788
