H. Herschel Mott, 26, river driver, attempted to save Elbert F. Richards, 23, from drowning, Ione, Washington, June 25, 1922. (See case of JOSEPH D. SHEPHERD.) As Joseph was swimming toward Richards, Mott plunged from the boom and swam 15 or 20 feet to Richards, who was under the surface. Diving and taking hold of Richards by the hair, Mott made several attempts to lift him above the surface but failed, and he then swam and was carried by the current, holding Richards, about 280 feet to within a few feet of a field of logs. Clinching Richards’s body with his legs, Mott then got hold of a drifting log with both hands but was submerged with it. He had become dazed and tired, and Richards slipped from him. Mott reached the boom, exhausted, but Richards was not seen alive again. 23460-1834
