H. Emerson Gravelle, 15, student, saved Elmer E. Gravelle, 15, student, from electric shock, Corralitos, California, July 7, 1922. Elmer climbed to the top beam of a wooden bridge and took hold of a poorly insulated wire which extended along the bridge and carried a current of 1,700 volts. He became unconscious and lay on the beam with the wire in contact with his hand. Emerson was on the beam a few feet from Elmer, and, although he was warned not to touch the wire, Emerson took hold of it to snap it out of Elmer’s hand. He received a shock, lost consciousness, and fell feet to the floor of the bridge. The fall freed his hand from the wire and also caused the wire to spring from Elmer’s hand. Both soon regained consciousness. Elmer lost several fingers as a result of burns, and Emerson lost three fingers and part of another of his right hand and was disabled six months by burns. 22726-2076
