Guy F. Elrod saved David W. Hall from being killed by a train, Lincoln, California, April 3, 1996. Hall, 33, was crossing a railroad track at a crossing when his motorized wheelchair became stuck on the track. A train approached on the track at about 50 m.p.h. Elrod, 46, food preparer, drove upon the scene and, seeing Hall’s predicament, ran to the track and waved his arms to signal the train crew. The train’s brakes were applied. Elrod then turned to Hall and, after trying unsuccessfully to pull the wheelchair off the track, tipped it away from the track. Elrod cleared the track just as the train arrived, the front of it striking the wheelchair and knocking it and Hall more than 20 feet into a ditch. Hall required hospitalization for injury to an arm.
