Guy A. Keally saved Hester A. Letterman from burning, Johnson City, Tennessee, October 16, 1987. Mrs. Letterman, 37, was trapped inside her burning car after a highway accident. Keally, 36, compensation benefits manager, ran to the car, the rear of which was fully involved by flames, and attempted, unsuccessfully, to open its passenger door. After Mrs. Letterman rolled down the passenger window, Keally partially entered the car, grasped Mrs. Letterman under her arms, and pulled her out. They fell to the ground. Shortly, the car’s interior was engulfed by flames. Mrs. Letterman required hospital treatment for smoke inhalation and other injuries, from which she recovered.
