Grover C. Hunter, 34, dentist, attempted to save J. Thomas Carter, 3, from drowning, Lagrange, Georgia, June 18, 1918. Thomas fell into an abandoned well 75 feet deep, containing seven feet of water. With no men present and no rope at hand, Hunter, who was suffering from serious injuries received in an accident, descended the well by holding to the sides and stepping in recesses in the sides of the clay walls. He slipped once about 10 feet, and considerable clay fell. Men arrived with a rope and lowered a rake to Hunter. Sitting on a ledge nine feet from the bottom, he raised Thomas from the water but found that Thomas was dead. The body was raised to the top with the rope, and then Hunter fastened the rope to himself and climbed to the top. He was in a semiconscious condition, suffered a relapse from the injuries he had previously received, and did not fully recover for a year. 18955-1605
