Gregory Chad Morter died attempting to rescue Kimberly M. Tack from assault, Butler, Pennsylvania, September 2, 1996. Ms. Tack, 29, was entering the first-floor doorway to a second-floor apartment at night when she was grabbed from behind by a man armed with a handgun. The assailant pulled her from the porch and began to drag her through the back yard of the adjoining property. Ms. Tack cried out for help. Her nephew, Morter, 24, sales representative, who was spending the night in the apartment, was alerted. He immediately ran down the stairs and outside. Reaching Ms. Tack, Morter grabbed her and pulled her away from the assailant. He calmed her and asked the assailant to leave her alone. The assailant fired a shot, striking Morter in the chest. Mortally wounded, Morter fell to the ground. Ms. Tack was kidnapped by the assailant, but she escaped about five hours later. The assailant was subsequently captured by police.
