Gregory A. Mellinger saved Alvin M. Bowman from drowning, Kleinfeltersville, Pennsylvania, March 10, 1986. Bowman, 65, fell through the ice of a lake on which he was fishing and called for help. Mellinger, 25, mobile home builder, who was near the lake’s bank, ran toward Bowman but en route broke through the ice and fell into the water. He climbed back onto the ice and continued toward Bowman, but he broke through several more times before reaching Bowman, who was about 300 feet from the bank. Mellinger threw Bowman a branch to hold onto, then threw one end of a jumper cable to him. With Bowman holding the cable, Mellinger pulled him onto safe ice. Mellinger then led Bowman to shore, from where Bowman was taken to the hospital and treated for hypothermia. He recovered. 61170-7052
