Grant Merlin Miller rescued Cheryl K. Hansen from burning, Oakland, California, July 29, 1986. Cheryl, 7, was riding in the front seat of her mother’s car when it was struck from behind by a tractor-trailer. The car burst into flames. Arriving at the scene just after the accident, Miller, 43, automobile importer, ran to the burning car and, as flames spread to the front-seat area, reached inside and unfastened Cheryl’s seat belt. When Cheryl then moved to the driver’s side of the car, Miller circled it and removed her through the driver’s window. Flames soon enveloped the car. Cheryl was hospitalized for extensive burns, and she recovered.
