Gisele Gagnon rescued Michael J. Gagnon from burning, St. Cyrille de Wendover, Quebec, January 13, 1987. Michael, 7, was asleep in his second-floor bedroom when fire broke out on the first floor of the house. His aunt, Miss Gagnon, 20, horticulturist, was alerted to the fire and was about to exit the house with other family members when she realized that Michael was apparently in his bedroom. Miss Gagnon returned to the second floor, where, despite dense smoke, which precluded visibility, and intense heat, she located Michael. She picked him up, then carried him downstairs and outside to safety. Michael was hospitalized for smoke inhalation and minor burns, from which he recovered. Miss Gagnon required extensive hospitalization for smoke inhalation and second- and third-degree burns.
