Giancarlo Mangialaio rescued Marlese J. Martin and Doria A. Newman from burning, Castlegar, British Columbia, October 16, 1987. Miss Martin, 19, was unconscious and Newman, 18, was semi-conscious and aflame inside a burning car after a highway accident at night. Although he was injured from his own vehicle having been involved in the accident, Mangialaio, 39, tavern manager, approached the burning car when he heard groans from inside it. He extended his upper body into the car through its passenger window, unbuckled Miss Martin’s seat belt, and pulled her out of the car. After taking her a safe distance away, Mangialaio returned to the window. He leaned into the car to his waist, grasped Newman, and pulled him out. Within seconds of his dragging Newman away, the car was engulfed in flames. Miss Martin and Newman were hospitalized for burns and other injuries, Newman’s second- and third-degree burns covering 23 percent of his body. Mangialaio sustained minor burns, from which he recovered.
