George W. Janes died attempting to save Stanley H. Young from drowning, Port Orange, Florida, February 17, 1924. Young, 33, carpenter, fell from a launch into swift and deep water in the Halifax River. Janes, 39, plasterer, who was clothed and the only person on board experienced in operating the engine, swam 300 feet toward Young and got hold of him under water. They rose together, face to face. Only their heads appeared at the surface. After awkward maneuvering, the boat was brought within 40 feet of them and anchored. A rope was thrown to Janes, but he did not take hold of it. It appeared that his arms were held because no swimming motions were seen, although Janes was a good swimmer. He and Young drifted farther from the boat and were drowned. 24084-2165
