George O. Larkin, 22, core maker, died attempting to save Keran T. Moran, 18, drill pressman, from drowning, Rock Island, Illinois, January 28, 1921. Moran broke through weak ice into deep water of the Rock River 120 feet from the bank. Larkin, who had been weakened by a long illness, was walking 10 feet behind Moran, and he moved to a point four or five feet from the hole and attempted to pull Moran out by means of a gun to which Moran held, but Moran lost his hold of the gun. Then Larkin lay on the ice, grasped Moran’s hand, and started to get to his feet, but the ice broke under him. He and Moran remained in the water for nearly a half-hour. A boat was then paddled to them through broken ice, and they were taken to the bank, but Larkin could not be revived. Moran was unconscious, but he recovered. 24439-1944
