George I. Roberts, 25, express messenger, saved Agnes M. Gettins, 12, from drowning, Antioch, California, March 17, 1908. From a trestle 8 feet above the water, Agnes was knocked by a train into the San Joaquin River, 200 feet from the bank. Roberts jumped from the platform of a car before the train stopped and, going to her, swam with her 15 feet to the trestle.
