George H. Abel, 18, student, died attempting to save Herbert E. Vogt, 21, clerk, from drowning, Brighton Beach, New York, July 28, 1918. Vogt tried to swim to the end of a jetty in the Atlantic Ocean. His strength failed, and he lost control of himself and called for help. Abel dived from the jetty and swam 30 feet to him and took hold of him. Vogt grasped Abel, and they struggled and then disappeared under the surface. They were brought to the surface in an unconscious condition and taken to shore. Vogt was revived, but Abel was drowned.
