George F. Bauer, Jr., 17, student, attempted to save Wayne E. Paul, 16, and saved Walter James Brobyn, 18, from drowning, Ocean City, New Jersey, July 12, 1921. (See case of WALTER JAMES BROBYN.) As Brobyn clung to the ring, George waded from shore and swam 310 feet toward Wayne, who had been drifting helplessly and had sunk when George was within 40 feet of him. After plunging twice in efforts to bring Wayne to the surface, George swam to Brobyn. He grasped Brobyn under his arm and swam 230 feet to wadable water on a bar, being hampered greatly in swimming by his attire, which encumbered him about the knees and ankles. From the bar he swam 70 feet farther to wadable water and was then assisted by another man to shore with Brobyn. George was exhausted. 21646-1829
