George E. Hemphill, 29, farmer, attempted to save Clarence Slaughter, 28, farmer, from suffocation, Anna, Texas, August 31, 1909. Slaughter was overcome by smoke from a powder blast at the bottom of a 20-foot well. Hemphill was lowered with a rope, which he untied from himself and fastened to Slaughter, and, holding to it, was drawn up with him. Slaughter died four days later without regaining consciousness. 4228-349
