George C. Oxley, 24, merchant, attempted to rescue E. Emerson Harte, 10, from a runaway, Marion, Iowa, August 16, 1915. Emerson was thrown from the seat of an open wagon when the team started to run away. He grasped and clung to the sideboard with the front of his body against the outside of it. Oxley ran 50 feet to the side of the wagon to which Emerson clung and ran along in front of the rear wheel, holding to the sideboard with one hand and to Emerson with the other. The team turned a corner and continued at a speed of about 12 m.p.h., but Oxley clung to the wagon and tried to keep Emerson from falling off. The team finally ran onto the sidewalk, and the wagon turned completely over on Oxley, covering all of him but his head and shoulders. Emerson was thrown to the ground but received only minor bruises. Oxley had bruises on his body and arms and was dazed, but he recovered. 15374-1198
