George O. Gallerani died saving Francis Ahern from drowning, Arlington, Massachusetts, January 18, 1918. Francis, 3, broke through the ice at the edge of an open area on Spy Pond 85 feet from the bank, where the water was 30 feet deep. Gallerani, 32, metal-spinner, skated to the hole. He broke through the ice to his knees close to the hole, but he regained his feet, took a few steps, and jumped into the water close to Francis. He shoved him onto a layer of submerged ice and then became distressed, sank almost immediately, and was drowned. Francis, who was unconscious, was pulled onto strong ice by means of a cane and was revived. 18632-1427
