Gary Richard Knaggs Sr., died assisting in an attempt to save two persons from drowning, Center Moriches, New York, May 28, 1977. A man and his wife were on their sailboat, which was in danger of breaking up in very rough water in the Atlantic Ocean near Fire Island, an area where small craft warnings had been issued. Knaggs, 32, carpenter, and another man took a motorboat to the sailboat and attempted to take it in tow. The motorboat capsized, and Knaggs and the other man drowned. The sailboat was taken to shore by the Coast Guard.
