Gary D. Knight rescued Charles R. Hall from burning, Portland, Oregon, May 25, 1989. Hall, 53, was in his second-floor apartment when fire broke out there. Driving nearby, Knight, 40, liquor license investigator, saw smoke issuing from the apartment and stopped at the scene. Learning that the apartment was occupied, Knight ran up its outside stairs to the opened front door and, covering his mouth and nose with his shirt, crawled inside. The thick smoke severely limiting visibility, Knight crawled through the living room to where he found Hall, who was lying unconscious on the floor. Grasping Hall’s ankles, Knight dragged him out of the apartment. Two others helped Knight carry Hall down the stairs and away from the building shortly before the apartment was engulfed in flame. Hall was hospitalized for severe burns and died five months later of effects of the ordeal.C
