Gail Mazzetti helped to rescue James L. Whitley, Jr., from assault, Houston, Texas, April 20, 1986. Whitley, 26, police officer, was arresting two men outside a restaurant when one of them punched him in the face and the other jumped on his back and took him to the sidewalk. The men kicked Whitley in the head and tried to pull his revolver from its bolster. Mrs. Mazzetti, 28, waitress at the restaurant, ran to Whitley and attempted to fight off one of his assailants. Another waitress also ran to the scene and struggled to prevent the other assailant from seizing Whitley’s gun. One of the assailants pushed Mrs. Mazzetti aside, then both turned and fled, one on foot and the other in a patrol car. Whitley suffered cuts and bruises, from which he recovered.
