Gaetan Jolicoeur rescued Jacques Chamberland from burning, D’Alembert, Quebec, June 4, 1993. Chamberland, 54, was the driver of a pickup truck that, in a highway accident, overturned onto its side. Fire that had erupted in the engine area spread into the cab, where Chamberland remained trapped in the wreckage. Jolicoeur, 32, construction contractor, drove upon the scene and stopped. After he and another man removed a cap covering the truck’s bed, Jolicoeur broke the rear window of the cab. He entered the cab partially to free Chamberland but was repelled by smoke and withdrew. He entered the cab again, released Chamberland’s seat belt and began to pull Chamberland from the truck, but their course was blocked by an armrest. Jolicoeur withdrew, kicked the armrest away, then entered the burning cab a third time. He seized Chamberland and pulled him out of the truck. Chamberland required hospital treatment for burns and other injuries. Jolicoeur recovered from superficial cuts and exposure to smoke.
