G. William Harrison saved Francis J. Keifer from drowning, Cumberland, Maryland, January 7, 1941. Francis, 4, broke through thin ice near the bank of the Potomac River and splashed and moved in water six and a half feet deep to a point 20 feet from the bank. The ice extended 15 feet from the bank. Harrison, 19, deliveryman, who was heavily clothed, ran on a culvert that extended out froin the bank, dived, and broke through the ice, sustaining minor cuts on his head and one ear. He swam eight feet to Francis, who was unconscious, and took hold of him. His clothing impeded his efforts, and he became numb from cold. He swam towing Francis 17 feet to wadable water, the ice breaking as he swam against it; and he sustained cuts on his hands. A man took Francis to the bank; and Harrison, who was shivering and was slightly dazed, waded to the bank. Francis was revived. 38771-3202
