G. Franklin Judy, 29, still cleaner, died attempting to save John M. Cochran, 49, still cleaner, from suffocation, Lawrenceville, Illinois, July 11, 1923. Cochran was overcome by gas when he entered a crude oil still to clean it. Judy had followed Cochran into the still but had ascended the ladder to the top at the urgent request of Cochran to get out because the still contained gas. At the suggestion of another man, Judy descended for Cochran, but he fell from the ladder, overcome. After one man had failed in an attempt to rescue Cochran, another entered the still, tied a rope on Cochran, and was then overcome. He was rescued after Cochran was drawn out. A man wearing a gas mask then descended and put a rope on Judy, and Judy was drawn out but could not be revived. Cochran recovered, although he was severely burned from having been in contact with steampipes in the still. 23713-1877
