Frederick Hearn saved Amelia, Stanley, and Louis Szurlej, from burning, North Westport, Massachusetts, May 27, 1922. A man beat the children, ages 7, 6, and 3, respectively, into unconsciousness, then set fire to the bed in which they lay and started a fire in the attic of their home, a small frame house. The children’s mother, who had been severely beaten, went to Frederick’s home for help. Frederick, 17, farmhand, ran to the burning house and entered, going through the kitchen into the bedroom containing the children. After a little delay in locating the children, he picked up Amelia and carried her out of the house. Then he returned and carried out one of the boys as bits of burning wood and plaster fell into the bedroom and kitchen and flames started to spread from the attic into the kitchen. Frederick’s mother begged him not to enter again, but he went into the bedroom through thick smoke and carried out the third child. The roof collapsed just after Frederick left the house. The children sustained only slight burns, but Stanley died later of the injuries inflicted in the beating. 22451-1894
