Frederick F. Reynolds, 22, shoe cutter, saved Archie C. Mann, 22, mechanic, from suffocation, Dansville, New York, June 10, 1917. Mann was overcome by fumes in a gasoline tank eight feet underground. After two men had refused to go to the rescue, Reynolds entered the tank on a crude ladder and tied a rope around Mann. Reynolds felt himself being affected and was assisted out of the tank by men at the top. Mann was then raised. He regained consciousness five hours later. 18019-1609
