Frederick D. Golike helped to save John E. Stock, Jr., from drowning, St. Wendells, Indiana, December 20, 1974. When an automobile containing John, 3, accidentally entered a lake and, sinking slowly, drifted to deep water, a man swam to the vehicle and broke in the rear window. Golike, 32, appliance assembler, entered the cold water and swam to near the automobile, where John then was floating at the surface and the man was nearby. While Golike was towing John toward the bank, the automobile sank completely; and the other man drowned. By the time he reached the bank with John, Golike has almost exhausted from the effect of cold water. 54704-6159
