Franz Hammer, 40, miner, died attempting to save Charles L. Petersen, 31, farmer, from suffocation, Fort Collins, Colorado, June 24, 1914. Petersen was overcome by dynamite fumes while climbing the ladder in a 50-foot shaft and fell to the bottom. Hammer descended a ladder to rescue Petersen and was also overcome. Petersen was later taken out alive and recovered, but Hammer was dead when he was removed, 55 minutes after entering. 13444-1240
