Frank Mervin Young died helping to rescue a girl from drowning, Roswell, Georgia, July 2, 2025. A young girl was with her family along the bank of the Chattahoochee River when she unintentionally entered the water, at which point she struggled to swim in water 7 feet deep. The girl’s mother then entered the water to assist her and also struggled to swim. On the bank nearby, Young, 59, a taxi driver who had driven the family to the river, entered the cold water to render aid. According to the girl’s brother, 14, Young reached the mother and the girl, ultimately submerging as he attempted to help them. Meanwhile, the girl’s brother had situated himself on land near the water’s edge with a plastic cooler in hand. The brother extended the cooler in the direction of the girl and the mother, who grasped it, allowing him to pull them to safety on land. Emergency personnel, including firefighters and police, arrived and took control of the scene. The girl had swallowed water and subsequently vomited after being removed from the river but was otherwise unharmed. Firefighters deployed a rescue boat that located Young’s body about an hour after he submerged. He had drowned.
