Frank L. Hunter, Jr., 11, schoolboy, saved Stephen Daviduk, Jr., 10, and Paul L. McElwee, 11, from drowning, Austintown, Ohio, April 26, 1954. A crude rowboat in which Stephen and Paul were riding in a pond capsized and sank in deep water 40 feet from the bank. The boys, who could not swim, rose floundering. Stephen’s calls for help attracted Frank, who waded rapidly from the bank as Paul lost consciousness and submerged. Frank swam to Stephen and took hold of him by the hair. He towed Stephen 25 feet to the opposite bank. Guided by rising air bubbles, Frank swam 35 feet to where Paul had disappeared. Repeatedly submerging himself, he located Paul three feet below the surface and locked his legs around him. Using only his arms, Frank swam with great effort to the bank towing Paul. A man who reached the bank revived Paul by artificial respiration in 15 minutes. Frank was fatigued and nervous but recovered. 43148-3921
