Frank Herd, 33, insurance agent, died in an attempt to save Cecil W. Bates, 25, cashier, from drowning, Pioneer Park, South Carolina, July 31, 1929. (See case of W. BRYANT ARNOLD.) In response to a call to take to Bates a boat that was drifting at a point about 50 feet from Bates, Herd, who was a poor swimmer, swam rapidly 75 feet to within a foot or two of the boat. He reached for the boat, but did not get hold of it, and sank. He was drowned.
