Francis W. Wayland, 16, schoolboy, saved Richard J. Akers, 17, and Worthington F. Seese, 16, schoolboys, from burning, Front Royal, Virginia, January 10, 1927. As Richard, Worthington, and Francis were asleep in a room on the third floor of a school building, the building caught fire, and dense smoke and heat prevented their escape by the stairways. Francis tied three sheets together, making a length of 21 feet, and he held one end of the sheets while Richard descended on the sheets and dropped to the ground. Worthington then descended part of the way in the same manner, but the sheets burned in two, and he fell to the ground. Flames were beginning to issue from a second-floor window below Francis. He then jumped to the ground 29 feet below the window, sustaining serious injuries to his feet, legs, and back. Richard and Worthington were somewhat injured, but they recovered. 28063-2315
