Francis Joseph Kelly saved an unidentified man from drowning, Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts, February 4, 1919. The man jumped into the Chicopee Manufacturing Canal, in which the water was eight feet deep, and drifted in a swift current. Kelly, 21, salesman, who was somewhat weak from a recent illness, ran about 850 feet along the bank to a point opposite the man, dived into the water, heavily dressed, and swam to the man, who was 20 feet from the bank and almost unconscious. Kelly took hold of the man and swam and was carried by the current 40 feet before he reached the bank. Other men then drew them upon the canal wall, which was of smooth stone and covered with ice. Kelly was almost exhausted. 19997-1735
