Francis J. Fox died attempting to save Edward Okula from drowning, Bethpage, New York, February 8, 1941. Edward, 10, fell into water eight feet deep in a pond and drifted away from the bank. Francis, 13, schoolboy, who was clothed and who could not swim, from the bank extended his hand toward Edward, who drifted farther away. He then went to a point on the other bank opposite Edward, who was 13 feet from him, stepped toward Edward in water a foot deep, took another step, and fell forward into deep water. He was submerged briefly, and a few seconds later he sank at a point five feet from the bank. He was drowned. A youth arrived and rescued Edward, who was semiconscious. 38924-3224
