Francis H. Williams saved Michael Trainor from drowning, Mays Landing, New Jersey, April 2, 1983. After falling into the high, turbulent water of the Great Egg Harbor River, Michael, 5, was carried downstream by a swift current into the middle of a broad basin. Alerted by Michael’s sister, Williams, 35, commercial painter, ran to the river and sighted Michael with difficulty. Jumping into the current fully clothed, Williams swam about 300 feet to Michael, who panicked and struggled with Williams, twice submerging him. Williams then swam with Michael to wadable water at a point about 100 feet from the bank. A policeman swam out to Williams and returned Michael to safety. Williams followed.
