Francis A. Murphy attempted to save Violet M. Cominetti from drowning, Frontenac, Kansas, June 7, 1923. Violet, 15, who could not swim, stepped into deep water while wading in a pond and in her struggle was carried 10 feet from the bank. Francis, 10, schoolboy, who was in the water 20 feet from her, swam to her. She grasped him around the neck with both hands and dragged him under the surface. They rose and went under again. The 12-year-old brother of Francis then swam to them from the bank, broke Violet’s hold, and pushed Francis toward the bank. Francis swam to the bank. Violet was drowned. 23519-2011
