Florencio B. Cuerrero saved Mack J. Canady from being struck by a freight car, Barstow, California, August 7, 1969. At night in a railroad yard Canady, 51, freight car conductor, was in a squatting position on one track in order to see under a freight train moving slowly along a parallel track. He did not notice that a cut of seven cars from another train was moving toward him at about 11 m. p. h. Guerrero, 52, railroad car inspector, was 25 feet away and noted the situation when the lead car was within 100 feet of Canady. Running to the track, Guerrero crouched and moved into the path of the cars. He lunged at Canady from behind and grasped him in a bear hug. Guerrero’s momentum carried him and Canady from the track, barely clearing the lead car.
