Ezekiel Fox rescued Shawn Goodwin from burning, Hamilton, Ontario, January 5, 2025. Goodwin, 53, who was homeless, was trapped inside his burning tent in Hamilton’s Bayfront Park. Ezekiel, 17, student, was driving home when he saw smoke billowing across the road. He pulled into a parking lot, shone his high beams on the tent, and saw smoke pouring out of it. Ezekiel exited his vehicle and heard Goodwin shouting for help inside the tent. He called his parents as he approached the tent when something inside exploded and flames shot into the sky. Ezekiel ran around the tent to find the door flap. He told his father he was going in, despite his mother’s warning in the background on the call urging him not to enter. Ezekiel tossed his phone on the ground, pulled back the flap, and ran inside. He found Goodwin about seven feet from the door under a burning tarp. Ezekiel tried to grab Goodwin’s arms, but they were burned, so he grabbed Goodwin under the arms and, walking backward, dragged him out as flames engulfed the tent. Ezekiel dragged Goodwin 15 feet from the tent. Goodwin’s skin was bubbling, so Ezekiel rolled him in the snow to douse the flames. Goodwin was taken to a hospital for burns and spent months recovering. Ezekiel was treated at a hospital for smoke inhalation and released the following morning.
