Evelyn E. Overstreet saved Willie S. Hicks from drowning, Panama City, Florida, July 25, 1931. Willie, 12, schoolboy, who could not swim, jumped into water nine feet deep from a boat landing alongside a dock at a point 100 feet from the shore of St. Andrews Bay and was submerged twice. Evelyn, 10, schoolgirl, who was much smaller and lighter than Willie and who was urged by her older sister not to attempt to aid him, jumped from the landing down two feet into the water and swam a stroke to Willie. He seized her around the body with both arms, and both were momentarily submerged. Evelyn kicked Willie on the legs, and he released his hold. She then had him hold to her foot, and she swam towing him 20 feet to wadable water. 31464-2638
