Eugene Victor Krause saved John D. Wells and attempted to save Lowell E. Lovejoy from burning, Hamilton, Ohio, April 13, 1969. At night Lovejoy’s automobile struck a concrete abutment and was badly damaged. Flames broke out at the engine. Lovejoy, 19, and Wells, 19, a passenger, were injured and knocked unconscious. Krause, 58, newspaper dealer, ran from his home to the side of the vehicle. Flames then were two feet high on the hood, and others burned on the floor of the front compartment. The door was jammed. Krause extended his upper body into the automobile through the open window and with some difficulty removed Wells, whose attire was partly burned. After dragging Wells away from the vehicle, Krause returned to it. Flames had spread to the seat, and smoke and heat were excessive. Krause again extended his upper body into the automobile. His feet were off the ground as he pulled at Lovejoy, who was caught. With his jacket Krause attempted in vain to put out flames on Lovejoy. Krause’s son then ran to him to give aid. Krause sent him away and again tried without success to free Lovejoy. By then flames had engulfed much of the seat; and Krause, who had breathed hot air and smoke, was forced to retreat. Firemen arrived and removed Lovejoy, who had died of burns. Wells recovered after hospitalization,
