Eugene A. Krauss, 50, housing management specialist, died attempting to save Richard Wyman, 10, from drowning, Aurora, Ohio, July 6, 1944. Richard fell from the bank into a pool below a waterfall of the Aurora Branch of the Chagrin River and struggled in water 12 feet deep four feet from the bank, where it rose vertically four feet from the water. The pool was in a gorge and was almost surrounded by high rocks that were moss-covered and afforded no handholds. Krauss, who was almost fully clothed and who was 50 feet away in shallow water, waded to water five feet deep and then swam 10 feet to Richard, who was under the surface. He took hold of his belt and supported him. Then a man who was a good swimmer reached the opposite bank eight feet from Krauss and Richard, dived and swam to them, and took hold of Richard’s belt. Saying he could do nothing further, Krauss released his hold and sank. The man swam towing Richard four feet to the bank but could get no hold and swam eight feet toward the opposite bank. He became tired, released Richard, swam to the bank, and was helped out of the water. Richard and Krauss were drowned. 40235-3373
