Esther Johanna Johnson attempted to save Arline Murphy from drowning, Grafton, Massachusetts, July 19, 1925. Miss Murphy, 23, became distressed while swimming in Lake Ripple, and Miss Johnson, 18, private secretary, swam 45 feet to her. Miss Murphy was just rising to the surface holding to a girl who had attempted to aid her. She let go of the girl, who then swam 10 feet to wadable water, and grabbed Miss Johnson at the shoulders. They were momentarily submerged together three times, and Miss Johnson was unable to break her hold or swim with her. Two men then arrived and rescued them. Miss Johnson was exhausted. 25470-2147
