Ero John Jarvis helped to save Kevin C. Kriener from drowning, Sequim, Washington, February 11, 1972. Kevin, 3, ventured onto an ice covered pond, broke through 35 feet from the bank, and floundered wildly in deep water. Informed of the situation, Jarvis, 69, went to the pond and, in a prone position, crawled on the ice to 20 feet from the bank, where he broke through. Breaking ice ahead of him, he reached Kevin but was unable to lift him out of the water. Greatly affected by the cold, Jarvis held Kevin and made his way 15 feet toward the bank through the broken ice. His son then arrived and extended a length of aluminum pipe onto the ice, which broke. Holding Kevin, Jarvis continued 10 feet farther along the path in the ice and was met by his son. Jarvis then followed as his son took Kevin and waded to the bank with him.
