Ernest E. Moore, 43, factory manager, died attempting to save Guelda B. Palmer, 36, electrician, from suffocation, Jacksonville, Florida, June 30, 1925. Palmer and others went to a large factory, which was being fumigated with hydrocyanic acid gas, to ventilate it. After doors on the first floor had been opened, Moore, wearing a mask supplied with oxygen, opened windows on the second floor and, on reaching the outside, reported that the gas was strong on the second floor. He knew that the gas was one of the most poisonous and quick-acting of gases. Palmer, wearing the mask, ascended a stairway to the third floor to open windows, but he did not appear at any of them. Although he was advised not to re-enter the building, Moore, without a mask, ran up the stairway to the third floor. He broke a window and called, “Here he is,” and then fell backward. A man ran inside, got on an elevator, and started to ascend. He was overcome by gas but was rescued. Half an hour later firemen found Palmer and Moore on the third floor close to the window. Both were dead. 27277-2275
