Eric L. Hodge, 16, student, saved Frances G. Forman, 16, and Elizabeth W. Miner, 15, from drowning, Athol Springs, New York, July 16, 1910. Eric and the girls were swimming in Lake Erie, when the girls became distressed 160 feet from shore. Eric swam 10 feet to Frances and grasped her, and when he raised her in the water, he went beneath the surface. He swam 30 feet with her to water in which he could stand, and another young man helped her to more shallow water. Eric had swallowed some water, and he was tired and short of breath, but he immediately swam toward Elizabeth. She became unconscious and went beneath the surface as he approached her. When he reached the spot where she had been, he reached down and pulled her to the surface. He swam about 30 feet with her, his head being under the surface most of the time. When he reached water in which he could stand, he was given assistance in getting her to shore. She was revived. 6582-873
